Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube endowed with 11% chromium, making it exceptionally suitable for applications demanding oxidation or corrosion resistance that surpasses the capabilities of carbon steel and certain coated steels. The 409 tube boasts robust oxidation resistance and excellent formability, although its lower chromium concentration results in relatively modest corrosion resistance compared to grades 304, 430, or 439. Nevertheless, its performance far exceeds that of mild steel. The 409 tube can be skillfully manipulated through roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, it does not harden when subjected to cold treatment processes, such as press or stretch bending. Despite its fair weldability, this material is not recommended for shock-loaded structures due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, which directly impacts mechanical quality. Grade 409's remarkable properties make it a preferred choice for tubing and stampings within automotive exhaust systems, where it effectively resists corrosion from exhaust gases and withstands high-temperature environments. While its mechanical properties are paramount in automotive and agricultural industries, it is not advisable to utilize this stainless steel for decorative purposes due to its less appealing appearance.
