Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel tube enriched with 11% chromium, purposefully crafted for applications demanding superior oxidation and corrosion resistance beyond the capabilities of carbon and coated steels. While boasting robust oxidation resistance and excellent formability, its lower chromium content results in comparatively reduced corrosion resistance versus grades like 304, 430, or 439. Nevertheless, it outperforms mild steel in many aspects. Versatile in its applications, 409 can be formed through roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, it remains non-hardenable under cold treatments involving warm and roll forming techniques. Despite its fair weldability, 409 should be avoided in shock-loaded structures due to grain structure expansion in heat-affected zones, impacting mechanical integrity. Predominantly utilized in automotive exhaust systems, as well as in agricultural machinery, the 409 stainless steel tube excels in resisting exhaust gas corrosion and high-temperature conditions. Prioritizing mechanical properties over aesthetic appeal, it is not advisable for decorative applications.
