CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Our high-strength TISCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod excels in resisting corrosive attacks, surpassing the performance of standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
  • This remarkable alloy is corrosion resistant in various industries, including chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing.
  • However, it is susceptible to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • The TISCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod can be welded using most common fusion and resistance methods with great success.
  • It is advisable to avoid oxyacetylene welding.
  • Typically, no pre-heating is necessary for welding.
  • Ensure that the inter-pass temperature is limited to 248°F.
  • Superior toughness can be achieved in the weld after a thorough heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Our stainless steel round rod offers excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Be aware that long-term exposure to elevated temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, uniformly heat the rod to 2150-2200°F and maintain for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • The ideal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F, while the steel remains austenitic.
  • To optimize conditions for hardening operations, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to ensure proper grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is typically limited to mild cold forming operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) condition.
  • For more severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance post cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.

MACHINABILITY:

  • The TISCO 17-4 pH Stainless Steel Round Rod can be machined effectively in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
