WELDABILITY:

  • Can be welded successfully using most common fusion and resistance welding methods.
  • Not recommended for joining via oxyacetylene welding.
  • Generally, pre-heating is not required, simplifying the welding process.
  • Maintain inter-pass temperatures below 248°F for optimal results.
  • Achieves superior toughness in the weld after undergoing complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F, ensuring durability at high temperatures.
  • Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F, holding for half an hour per inch of thickness.
  • Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, while the steel remains austenitic.
  • To ensure ideal conditions for hardening operations, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool the forgings to below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is suitable for mild operations in its annealed (solution treated) condition due to its inherent hardness.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to help prevent potential cracking.
  • Bend radius often exceeds 7T for optimal results.
  • To enhance stress corrosion resistance after cold forming, re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended.

MACHINABILITY:

  • Machinable in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions, offering versatility.
