GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel alloyed with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most commonly utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting a yield strength double that of conventional austenitic grades. Alongside its exceptional fatigue strength, it offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 showcases superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its composition also provides exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enables Duplex 2205 to perform well in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is susceptible to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short exposures, making it unsuitable for use above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Offers excellent weldability.
- Typically requires filler metal during welding to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The annealing temperature range falls between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does work-harden.
- Special care is needed to accommodate a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may cool faster than the bulk, risking cracks in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 boasts remarkable formability across various fabrications, though its high tensile strength can present certain challenges. Even with adequately powered equipment, it's crucial to account for the increased spring-back due to this grade's inherent strength, ensuring precision and efficiency in your operations.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The need for higher cutting forces accelerates tool wear. Here are some essential machining guidelines: A) Employ powerful, rigid machines with robust mounting for both tools and workpieces, B) Reduce vibration by keeping tool extensions minimal, C) Utilize a nose radius on tools no larger than necessary, using carbides with a sharp edge while maintaining strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure each cut penetrates below the work-hardened layer formed by previous passes.

What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on cold rolling processes and post-rolling surface treatments. Common surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other finishes:
- NO.1: Achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, the NO.1 surface removes black oxide scale formed during these processes. This silvery white, matte finish is ideal for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant applications where high surface gloss is not required, such as in the alcohol, chemical industries, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface is refined using a light roller, offering a brighter finish than 2D. With a surface roughness Ra value between 0.1 to 0.5μm, it suits a variety of processing needs. Its adaptability makes it perfect for the chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and architectural applications like building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, designed for high strength and hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. This surface is achieved through cold working methods like rolling, leveraging the work hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel to enhance strength and hardness. The TR hard surface retains the rolled finish after cold rolling without subsequent annealing.
- Re-rolled Bright 2H: Following the intricate rolling operation, our premium stainless steel strip undergoes a meticulous bright annealing process. Utilizing a state-of-the-art continuous annealing line, the strip is swiftly cooled as it moves at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. This advanced treatment ensures the surface finish is an impeccable 2H re-rolled bright, exuding brilliance and superior quality.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface is renowned for its exceptional polishing effect, showcasing a level of brightness superior to No. 3. Achieved through the meticulous polishing of cold-rolled stainless steel plates with a 2D or 2B surface, it is further refined using a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm. Widely adopted in various sectors, the No. 4 surface is ideal for restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decoration, and containers, delivering both aesthetic appeal and functional excellence.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly referred to as the hairline finish, is a distinctive, continuous abrasive texture specified by the Japanese JIS standard, achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. Despite the ambiguity under the Chinese GB3280 standard, the HL finish remains a popular choice for architectural applications including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering a sleek, modern aesthetic.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface undergoes further refinement from the No. 4 finish, polished with a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per the GB2477 standard. This process yields a surface with excellent metallic luster, softness, minimal reflection, and no imaging, making it an optimal choice for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and upscale cooking supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through a specialized bright heat treatment post cold rolling, conducted in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and retain the cold-rolled surface's gloss. Afterward, a high-precision smooth roller polishes the surface to enhance its brightness. The surface roughness is impressively low at 0.05-0.1μm, close to a mirror finish. This versatile surface is suitable for various applications including food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative elements.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also known as a mirror surface, offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles, often referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry. This BA material serves as the perfect raw material for mirror processing, requiring only light polishing to achieve a stunning, reflective finish.
