GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 Round Bar is an exceptional duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar featuring 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Distinguished as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. This bar excels in fatigue strength and offers remarkable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest conditions.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 exhibits extraordinary corrosion resistance, outperforming 316 and 316L in most settings.
- The elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen also ensure high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic environments.
- Effectively resists chloride stress corrosion cracking and can endure temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The inclusion of ferrite contributes to the stellar performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 offers commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Therefore, its use is not advised above this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent weldability.
- However, welding without filler metal should generally be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range is 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though it does work-harden.
- Special measures are necessary to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to mitigate warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers of Duplex 2205 suggest a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the work piece shape is not compact, the edges may become cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in the cooler areas.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent formability across various fabrications, yet its exceptional strength can present challenges. Even with powerful equipment, it's crucial to account for the higher spring-back due to the grade's robust nature.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is slightly more challenging than 300 series austenitic stainless steel, requiring higher cutting forces and resulting in quicker tool wear. Here are key guidelines for effective machining: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a short tool nose radius to ensure the carbide edge remains sharp yet strong; D) Sequence machining so that each cut's depth is below the work-hardened layer from prior operations.
