Grade 409
- Grade 409 is a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, ideal for automotive exhaust systems. This general-purpose chromium stainless steel excels in applications requiring superior mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability over aesthetic appeal, particularly at elevated temperatures.
- Adhering to rigorous ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, sub-grades such as S40910, S40920, and S40930 now replace the generic grade 409.
- These grades are stabilized with varying amounts of titanium, niobium, or their combination. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M exclusively lists standard Grade 409 for tube specifications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 offers robust resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While it may develop a light surface rust in most environments, this layer prevents further corrosion but is not ideal for cosmetic use. Its corrosion resistance matches that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410) but is less than 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance:
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C. However, these temperatures may vary based on specific service conditions.
Heat Treatment:
- Annealing involves heating to 790-900°C followed by air cooling. Note, this grade cannot be toughened via heat treatment processes.
Welding:
- Grade 409 is easily weldable but recommends a pre-heat of 150-260°C. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods are suitable, using Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, yielding a more ductile weld.
- For enhanced weld ductility, post-weld annealing is recommended at 760-815°C.
Welding small sections does not necessitate post-weld annealing. Typically, automotive exhaust tubing is welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To mitigate the impacts of grain formation, all welding should utilize minimal heat.
Typical Applications:
Common applications include automotive exhaust systems, like catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties:
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for Grade 409 in annealed tubing. ASTM A240M specifies the composition for additional grades used in coil and sheet applications. Other items may have similar but not identical specifications.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless can be readily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics are akin to those of carbon steel.
