The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel is superior to standard austenitic steels like 316L, yet slightly below super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum. Grade 904L stainless steels tubes exhibit exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. This grade's high resistance to stress corrosion cracking is attributed to its significant nickel content. Additionally, the incorporation of copper enhances its resistance to sulphuric acid and other reducing agents under both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L sits between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. It is less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. Solution treatment after cold working is required to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels provide good oxidation resistance. However, structural stability diminishes at elevated temperatures, especially above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can be solution heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is suitable for hardening these grades.
Welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be performed using all conventional methods. Pre-heat and post-weld heat treatments are not necessary. However, this grade can be prone to hot cracking in constrained weldments. Grade 904L electrodes and rods should be used for welding these steels according to AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high-purity steels with low *** content, suitable for machining by all standard methods. They can be easily bent to a small radius in cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally not required, it should be performed when fabrication occurs under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
The major applications of grade 904L stainless steel tubes include:
