904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product designed to withstand severe corrosion, offering exceptional resistance and durability.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel featuring a low carbon level. This premium alloy includes copper, enhancing its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, it boasts resilience against stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic and renowned for its formability, toughness, and welding capabilities, 904L stainless steel contains a high concentration of valuable elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attack. Its high nickel content ensures outstanding stress corrosion cracking resistance. With added copper, it offers superior resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents in both harsh and mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L falls between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. To achieve peak stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive environments, this grade requires solution treatment following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steels tubes are renowned for their exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. This robust resistance, especially against stress corrosion cracking, stems from the heightened nickel content in its alloy composition. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents across both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L strikes a balance, falling between the super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and the standard 316L austenitic grades. Although less resistant compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, grade 904L requires solution treatment post cold-working to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit admirable oxidation resistance. However, it is crucial to note that their structural stability diminishes at high temperatures, particularly surpassing 400°C.
To achieve optimal hardness, grade 904L stainless steels undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling.
Welding of grade 904L stainless steels can be achieved using all conventional methods without the need for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, caution is advised as grade 904L is susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldment conditions. Using grade 904L electrodes and rods in accordance with AS 1554.6 is recommended for welding these steels.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are high purity steels characterized by their low sulfur content, allowing for machining through standard methods. These tubes can be bent readily under cold conditions to a small radius. While subsequent annealing is not typically required, it should be considered under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions to ensure optimal performance.
