904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic product meticulously engineered to withstand severe corrosion, offering unparalleled corrosion resistance.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a low carbon level. This high-alloy stainless steel is enhanced with copper, which significantly boosts its resistance to strong reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid. Not only is it resistant to stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion, but it is also non-magnetic and boasts exceptional formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. The 904L grade is characterized by its high concentrations of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in hot seawater and chloride attack resistance. With a high nickel content, it offers superb stress corrosion cracking resistance. The addition of copper provides enhanced resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L falls between that of super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Although more susceptible than grades 304L and 310L, which lack Mo, 904L attains top resistance to stress corrosion cracking in sensitive settings when treated with a solution following cold working.

Grade 904L stainless steels tube boasts excellent resistance to warm seawater and chloride attack. Its high resistance to stress corrosion cracking is attributed to the significant nickel content. Additionally, the inclusion of copper enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, even in aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L occupies a middle ground between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic grades. However, grade 904L is less resistant than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum. Post cold-working solution treatment is essential to maximize stress corrosion cracking resistance under critical conditions.
Grade 904L stainless steels exhibit good oxidation resistance. However, their structural stability declines at elevated temperatures, particularly above 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steels can undergo solution heat treatment between 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. This thermal treatment is effective for hardening the alloy.
Welding grade 904L stainless steels can be done using all conventional methods. This grade does not necessitate pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments. However, it may be susceptible to hot cracking in constrained weldments, and 904L-specific electrodes and rods should be used as per AS 1554.6.
Grade 904L stainless steels are high-purity, low-sulfur alloys that can be machined using standard methods. They can be easily bent to small radii under cold conditions. While subsequent annealing is generally unnecessary, it is advisable when fabrication occurs under severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.
