Grade 409
- Grade 409, a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, is a versatile chromium stainless steel predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems. Renowned for its mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability, Grade 409 is ideal for applications prioritizing these qualities over aesthetic appeal, especially in high-temperature environments.
- In alignment with ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat rolled steel, Grade 409 is now categorized under the sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930 instead of the generic Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varying degrees using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these sub-grades can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M only specifies the standard Grade 409 for tube applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 boasts resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a superficial rust layer may form in most environments, it acts as a barrier against further corrosion but is not ideal for visual appeal. Its corrosion resistance parallels that of 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades like 410, though it is lower than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 demonstrates excellent scaling resistance, enduring intermittent service temperatures up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. Specific temperature limits can vary based on the service environment.
Heat Treatment
- For annealing, heat Grade 409 to 790-900°C and then allow it to cool in air. This grade cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easily weldable, though pre-heating to 150-260°C is advisable. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be utilized, Grade 309 welding rods or electrodes are pre-qualified according to AS 1554.6, delivering a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
For small sections, post-weld annealing is not necessary. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded autogenously, without filler metal.
To mitigate grain formation effects, welding should be conducted with minimal heat input.
Typical Applications
Ideal for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M defines the specifications for annealed Grade 409 tubing. ASTM A240M outlines the composition of other grades for coil and sheet applications, which may have similar but not identical properties to Grade 409.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics closely mimic those of carbon steel.
