GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that offers a perfect balance of excellent corrosion resistance, remarkable formability, and reliable mechanical properties. Its superior resistance to various chemicals makes it ideal for diverse applications, with its primary uses found in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant, is offered in bar form, specifically designed for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, enhances corrosion resistance while maintaining the beneficial characteristics of Grade 430.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat-rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms like forgings and bars have comparable, though not identical, properties tailored to their specifications. For bar products, Grade 430F properties are detailed in ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 boasts commendable resistance to a broad spectrum of corrosive environments, including some organic acids. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved with a highly polished or ground finish. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is on par with Grade 304, and like all ferritic grades, it offers excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, shows reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 retains its oxidation resistance up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C during continuous use. Prolonged exposure in the 400-600°C range can cause brittleness at room temperature, a condition that can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, followed by slow furnace cooling to 600°C, and then quick air cooling. Avoid slow cooling from 540-400°C to prevent embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- Note: This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively mitigated by a post-weld anneal at a precise temperature range of 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement is not achievable in this context.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades such as 304.
- However, there remains a tendency for galling and material pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have undergone light drawing are notably easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- The Grade 430F, known for its free machining properties, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate of this material simplifies bending and forming processes compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility limits its suitability for very severe operations.
- For severe bends, it is advisable to position the bend axis at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
