GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel that offers remarkable corrosion resistance and formability along with practical mechanical properties. Its exceptional resistance makes it suitable for various chemical applications, with widespread use in automobile trim and appliance components.
- Grade 430F, a free-machining variant of this grade, is available in bar form for use in automatic screw machines. Grade 434, which includes molybdenum, shares Grade 430's beneficial characteristics but with enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M defines the characteristics of Grade 430 for flat rolled products, such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar, though not identical, properties apply to forgings and bars, as specified in their respective standards. ASTM A582 provides the properties of Grade 430F for bar form.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 material exhibits strong resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including certain organic acids. The highest levels of corrosion resistance are achieved with a high polish or ground finish. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to Grade 304, and it has very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, like all ferritic grades.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has substantially reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 resists oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C during continuous service. However, extended heating in the 400-600°C range may cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be eliminated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing - Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C followed by quick air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C can cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal - Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat at 150-200°C if welding is necessary.
- Embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone can be effectively relieved through a post-weld anneal process at 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement will not be achieved.
MACHINING:
- Grade 430 stainless steel is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there's still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn exhibit easier machining capabilities compared to those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, offers significantly improved machinability.
FABRICATION:
- A lower work hardening rate facilitates bending and forming, making these processes somewhat easier than for grade 304.
- However, the lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is achievable.
