GENERAL PROPERTIES
- Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable stainless steel known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and formability. Not only does it exhibit practical mechanical properties, but it also stands out in chemical applications. However, it is most commonly utilized in automobile trims and appliance components.
- Grade 430F is the free-machining variant, available in bar form for automatic screw machines. Grade 434, enriched with molybdenum, shares the beneficial traits of Grade 430 while offering enhanced corrosion resistance due to the molybdenum content.
- ASTM A240/A240M outlines the properties of Grade 430 for flat rolled products such as plates, sheets, and coils. Other forms, like forgings and bars, follow similar but not identical standards per ASTM specifications. For Grade 430F bars, refer to ASTM A582.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers excellent resistance to a variety of corrosive environments, including organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance is achieved when polished or ground. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is similar to Grade 304, and like all ferritic grades, it has high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
- The free-machining grade, 430F, has reduced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, akin to other high sulfur free-machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 can withstand oxidation up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. Extended heating in the 400-600°C range can cause brittleness at room temperature, which can be mitigated through annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm thickness, slow furnace cool to 600°C, then air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400°C causes embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Anneal: Heat to 760-815°C, then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable by thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- If welding is required, pre-heat the material to 150-200°C.
- Alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone with a post-weld anneal at 790-815°C.
- Grain refinement is not achievable under these conditions.
MACHINING:
- This material is easier to machine compared to standard austenitic grades like 304.
- However, there is still a tendency for galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Bars that have been lightly drawn are simpler to machine than those in an annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining version of 430, offers significantly easier machining.
FABRICATION:
- The lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming somewhat easier compared to grade 304.
- However, lower ductility restricts very severe operations.
- For severe bends, ensure the bend axis is at right angles to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
