GENERAL PROPERTIES
- 321 Stainless Steel Pipe (UNS S32100) is a titanium-stabilized, austenitic stainless steel with superior overall corrosion resistance. It exhibits high resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to chromium carbide precipitation temperatures (800 - 1500°F / 427 - 816°C). The alloy can withstand oxidation up to 1500°F (816°C) and offers enhanced creep and stress rupture properties compared to 304 and 304L steel pipes. Additionally, it boasts commendable low-temperature toughness.
- Stainless Steel Tube 321H (UNS S32109) is a higher carbon version of this alloy (0.04 - 0.10), designed for increased creep resistance and strength at temperatures above 1000°F (537°C). Typically, the carbon content allows for dual certification.
- Alloy 321 can be toughened solely through cold working, not by heat treatment. It can be effortlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication techniques.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Exhibits excellent general corrosion resistance comparable to 304.
- Engineered for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 1800 - 1500°F (427 - 816°C).
- Applicable in most diluted organic acids at moderate temperatures.
- Suitable for pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures.
- Can be used in up to 10% diluted solutions at elevated temperatures.
- Resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon service.
- Effective in chloride or fluoride-free caustic solutions at moderate temperatures.
- Not suitable for chloride solutions, even in small concentrations, or sulfuric acid service.
PROCESSING
Alloy 321/H can be welded and processed easily with standard shop fabrication practices.
HOT FORMING
- Recommended working temperatures are 2100 - 2300°F (1149 - 1260°C) for forging, upsetting, and other hot working processes.
- Not suitable for work below temperatures of 1700°F (927°C).
- Material must be water quenched or fully annealed post-working to regain maximum corrosion resistance.
COLD FORMING
- Highly ductile and easy to form.
WELDING
- Readily weldable by most standard processes.
- Post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary.
MACHINING
- Hardening rate of 321 makes it less machinable than 410 stainless steel but similar to 304.
