CORROSION RESISTANCE:
316L Stainless steel rod
- 316L Stainless Steel Round Bar exhibits superior corrosion resistance compared to 304 grade, especially in a variety of atmospheric environments and corrosive media due to its enhanced chromium
and molybdenum content that fortify its resilience. - Though robust, it is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments and stress corrosion cracking above approximately 122°F (50°C).
- 316L is deemed resistant to potable water containing up to 1000mg/L chlorides at ambient temperatures, which decreases to 500mg/L at
140°F (60°C). - Often referred to as 'marine grade stainless steel,' it is important to note that it is not resistant to warm sea water.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- 316L offers excellent oxidation resistance, enduring up to 1600°F (870°C) intermittently and up to 1700°F (925°C) continuously.
- This grade is more adept at resisting carbide precipitation, ensuring longevity and durability.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:
- With impeccable weldability via all standard fusion techniques, 316L can be welded efficiently both with and without filler metals.
- For Grade 316, post-weld annealing is essential for maximum corrosion resistance; however, this step is not required for Grade 316L.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Annealing temperature range lies between 1900°F and 2100°F (1038°C to 1149°C).
- It's crucial to remember that 316L cannot be hardened through heat treatment.
- Special measures should be taken to counterbalance the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- Manufacturers typically recommend forging at temperatures between 2100°F and 2300°F.
- Avoid forging below 1700°F (927°C). For optimal
- corrosion resistance, apply a final anneal to the forgings.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- 316/316L Stainless steel rods are remarkably tough and ductile, enabling straightforward cold working processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
and bending without significant difficulty. - It is advisable to anneal severely cold-formed parts to relieve stresses.
MACHINEABILITY:
- Machining Type 316/316L Stainless steel rods is slightly more challenging than Type 304 due to its toughness.
- When machining, 316/316L produces tough and strong chip characteristics.
- Utilizing chip breakers and curlers is recommended.
- Employing the largest possible tool and ample cutting fluid is essential.
- Heavy positive feeds at low speeds are advised as 316/316L work hardens quickly.
