Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562 to 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by a solution anneal and quench. However, if hot forming stops at temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C) and is immediately quenched, further heat treatment may not be necessary. It is vital to quench the entire workpiece from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling falls below 2012°F (1100°C) or if cooling is too slow, solution annealing and quenching should follow. 904L should be solution annealed at 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C) for optimal results.
Machining
- The cold work hardening rate of Alloy 904L makes it less machinable compared to 410 and 304 stainless steels, necessitating careful selection of machining parameters and techniques.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its uniform austenitic structure and balanced alloying elements distribution minimize segregation during solidification, which enhances corrosion resistance. Segregation is less prominent in 904L and typically uses a filler metal matching the base metal composition but can also be welded without filler metal.
- The recommended welding consumables for 904L are 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire, ensuring optimal weld quality and performance.
