Composition and Property: Duplex steel S32205 encompasses approximately 22% chromium, 5-6% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and high nitrogen levels, leading to superior corrosion resistance and strength. Its dual-phase microstructure of austenite and ferrite surpasses conventional austenitic or ferritic stainless steels in mechanical properties. Corrosion Resistance: A standout characteristic of S32205 rods is their resistance to various forms of corrosion. Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a premium duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel bar, boasting an impressive composition of 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Renowned as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it delivers a yield strength that is double that of standard austenitic grades. Additionally, Duplex 2205 exhibits superior fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest conditions.
Leading producers of Duplex 2205 recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece isn't compact, the edges may cool significantly more than the bulk, posing a risk of cracking in cooler regions.
Duplex 2205 stands out with its remarkable formability across various fabrications. However, its exceptional strength can present challenges. Even with sufficiently powered equipment, considerations must be made for increased spring-back due to the grade's high strength.
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 is more demanding compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to quicker tool wear. Follow these guidelines for optimal machining: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with a strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as feasible to maintain a sharp carbide edge while ensuring adequate strength; D) Sequence the machining operations so that each cut remains beneath the work-hardened layer from previous operations.
