As a premier titanium alloy tube manufacturer and supplier in China, Daxun Alloy delivers high-quality Grade 5 titanium tubes globally, earning accolades from numerous projects.
Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most widely adopted titanium alloy, accounting for over half of all titanium usage. Typically used in the annealed state, it withstands temperatures up to 400°C (750°F) and is welded with matching or ELI filler wire. This alloy provides significantly higher strength compared to commercially pure titanium tubes while offering better stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). The thermal conductivity of Grade 5 titanium tube is about 60% lower than that of CP titanium. Notably, it is heat treatable, allowing for optimal strength and performance. The advantages of Grade 5 titanium seamless tubes include excellent formability, low density, and superior corrosion resistance.
Grade 5 titanium offers an ideal blend of strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability, making it suitable for a wide array of applications including military aircraft, aerospace components, precision-guided systems, armor, naval equipment, military vacuum apparatus, and more. The closely related 6-4ELI variant is also used in surgical implants. Typically utilized in environments up to 400°C, it delivers improved ductility and toughness in cold working conditions. With excellent specific strength, it is usually provided in an annealed state and can be heat treated to enhance strength for diverse applications. Ti 6Al-4V titanium seamless tubes exhibit a broad spectrum of desirable properties across temperatures from -210°C to 400°C, combining high strength, toughness, and superior welding and processing characteristics.

INTRODUCTION
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the pinnacle of titanium alloys, prized for its unparalleled strength and versatility. This duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy integrates aluminium as an alpha stabiliser and vanadium as a beta stabiliser. Capable of performing in cryogenic conditions down to around 800°F (427°C), this alloy is engineered for the most demanding applications. Utilized extensively in annealing, solution treatment, and ageing processes, it finds critical applications in aerospace and defense, including jet engine compressor blades, fuselage components, space capsule parts, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and other high-strength, lightweight forgings.
- Forging this alloy begins with vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM). Remelting follows in one or two vacuum arc steps to ensure purity and consistency.

- The ultimate properties are achieved in the solution treated and aged condition, especially in small cross-sections that are quickly quenched. Larger sections or delays in quenching can result in suboptimal properties.
For ideal results, ensure prompt quenching of smaller sections, as delays or larger sections can lead to less than optimal properties.
HARDNESS
In the annealed state, the typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are forged at a starting temperature of 1,750°F (954°C) and an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For superior results, a reduction of at least 35% is recommended.
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is renowned for its difficulty to form at room temperature, even after annealing. However, it excels in withstanding rigorous forming operations, such as bending or stretching, when annealed at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. For precise hot sizing or shaping, creep forming is ideal at temperatures between 1,000 and 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
MACHINABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy can be efficiently machined using techniques suitable for austenitic stainless steels. This involves slow speeds, heavy feeds, and rigid setups,
along with substantial amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluid.
WELDABILITY
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube offers excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated, partially aged conditions, with aging conducted during post-weld heat treatment.
- To prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, strict precautions are necessary. Fusion welding can be effectively performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or by employing an inert gas tail shield around the molten metal and adjacent hot zone. Methods like spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can also be carried out without needing a protective environment.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
- DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling, and it can absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treatment, and brazing. This contamination can decrease ductility and negatively impact notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.
