DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
SUPERIOR HEAT TREATMENT
- For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, annealing can be done at temperatures ranging from 1,700°F to 1,900°F (927°C - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275°F - 1,400°F (691°C - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000°F - 1,200°F (538°C - 649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675°F - 1,750°F (913°C - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by water quenching.
- 4. Aging: 975°F - 1,025°F (524°C - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, followed by air cooling.
Rapid quenching of smaller sections in the solution-treated and aged condition yields optimal properties. Conversely, larger sections and delayed quenching might result in suboptimal properties.
ROBUST HARDNESS
Typically, the annealed condition achieves a hardness of Rockwell C 30-34, while the solution-treated and aged condition reaches approximately Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability and Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended to attain optimal properties.
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, renowned for its exceptional strength, presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. To achieve severe forming operations like bending or stretching, the material should be annealed and worked at up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming can be efficiently executed through creep forming within the temperature range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar exhibits excellent machinability when utilizing austenitic stainless steel machining methods. This involves operating at slow machining speeds, employing high feed rates, using rigid tools, and administering copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure precision and efficiency.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both annealed and solution plus partially aged conditions, with aging occurring during post-weld heat treatment. To prevent contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen, fusion welding must be conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas to shield the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, employing a tail shield as necessary. Additionally, spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without needing a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon contamination during processes such as forging, heat treating, or brazing. Such contamination can result in reduced ductility, which may negatively impact notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Avoid using titanium with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
Table 1 demonstrates the general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media. CP titanium offers excellent corrosion resistance in diverse environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium demonstrates good resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It resists crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), regardless of pH, even under super-chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits exceptional resistance to erosion in flowing conditions.
Experience the enduring strength of our titanium, capable of withstanding seawater velocities up to an impressive 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec) with negligible impact. Even the presence of abrasive particles, like sand, has minimal effect on its exceptional corrosion resistance.
Advanced Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistance
Titanium remains highly resistant to hydrogen absorption, even in seawater and elevated temperatures. Significant hydrogen absorption occurs only under the following stringent conditions:
- 1. pH levels are below 3 or above 12
- 2. Temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
- 3. A mechanism for hydrogen generation exists, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Exceptional Bio-corrosion Resistance
Titanium alloys showcase unparalleled immunity to all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. Given their non-toxic nature towards marine organisms, biofouling in seawater is possible but can be effectively controlled through chlorination or increased water velocity in heat exchangers.
Superior Corrosion Fatigue Performance
Unlike numerous other materials, titanium does not suffer from diminished fatigue performance in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion Protection
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned near the noble end alongside stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when paired with other metals. This positioning ensures titanium remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion, though it may accelerate the corrosion of the paired metal. When coupled with metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is enhanced.
Robust Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod exhibits unwavering fatigue properties even in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain unchanged whether tested in air or seawater.
Outstanding Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod offers excellent weldability, provided necessary precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactive nature, an inert gas shield is essential for both OD and ID of the rod, and the material must be free from grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rods are typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. To minimize the heat-affected zone, low heat input is recommended. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for Titanium Rods.
