Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel offering superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 details three (3) subcategories of Type 409 stainless steel: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with specific Ti or Nb stabilization requirements. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions can be supplied as UNS S40900. This alloy is also available with enhanced formability properties, commonly known in the industry as 'High Performance' or 'Ultra Form'.

Grade 409
- Grade 409, a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, is a versatile chromium-based material renowned for its exceptional use in automotive exhaust systems. Prioritizing mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability, Grade 409 is ideal for high-temperature applications where appearance is secondary.
- In alignment with ASTM standards, including ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, sub-grades S40910, S40920, and S40930 now replace the generic Grade 409, offering more specialized material options.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to varied extents using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these sub-grades can be certified under S40900 (Grade 409). However, ASTM A268M lists the standard Grade 409 exclusively for tubing.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 exhibits robust resistance to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. While a protective layer of light surface rust may develop in most environments, it effectively prevents further corrosion. This characteristic makes it unsuitable for cosmetic purposes but comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), though its resistance is lower than that of the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance:
- Grade 409 withstands scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and continuous service up to 675°C. These limits can vary based on specific service conditions, ensuring the material's adaptability in high-temperature settings.
Heat Treatment:
- Annealing: Heat the material to 790-900 degrees Celsius, then cool it with air. Note that this grade cannot be toughened through heat treatment.
Welding:
- Grade 409 is easily weldable; a pre-heat of 150-260°C is advisable for optimal results. While Grade 409 or Grade 430 electrodes or filler rods can be utilized, Grade 309 rods or electrodes are pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, yielding a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility, ensuring superior performance.
For welding small sections, post-weld annealing is not necessary. Automotive exhaust tubing is typically welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate grain formation, maintain minimal heat during all welding processes.
Typical Applications:
Primarily used for automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers. Its properties make it ideal for these demanding applications.
Specified Properties:
- ASTM A268M specifies the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing, while ASTM A240M delineates the composition for other grades in coil and sheet applications. Specifications for additional items may exhibit similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be easily cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn, displaying formability characteristics akin to carbon steel.
