Leading Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers in China

Grade 904L:

• Austenitic stainless steel sheet of grade 904L is a non-stabilized, high alloy, low carbon steel. Enhanced with copper, this grade offers exceptional resistance to strong reducing acids, especially sulfuric acid. It also provides robust defense against chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and pitting/crevice corrosion.
• This grade boasts outstanding formability and weldability, maintaining a non-magnetic property under all conditions. Thanks to its austenitic structure, it also exhibits exceptional toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.
• 904L stainless steel contains significant amounts of nickel and molybdenum, both of which are premium elements. Historically, Duplex stainless steel 2205 (S31803 or S32205) has been a cost-effective alternative for many applications where 904L was used, resulting in a reduced frequency of 904L's utilization.

Corrosion Resistance:

• 904L stainless steel boasts remarkable resilience to various challenging conditions, including sulfuric acid. With a PRE of 35, it excels in resisting warm seawater and high chloride environments. The high nickel content ensures superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking compared to standard austenitic grades. Additionally, its copper content enhances resistance to sulfuric and other reducing acids, particularly in aggressive mid-concentration ranges.
• 904L's corrosion resistance is generally superior to the standard austenitic grade 316L yet slightly below the highly alloyed 'super austenitic' grades with 6% molybdenum.
• 904L is not as resistant to strong corrosive environments as molybdenum-free grades like 304L and 310L.
• To achieve optimal stress corrosion cracking resistance after cold work, 904L stainless steel should undergo solution treatment.

Heat Resistance:

• 904L exhibits strong oxidation resistance but suffers from structural instability at higher temperatures due to the precipitation of brittle phases like sigma. It is not recommended for use above 550°C. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code restricts design stress values for 904L at 371°C.

Heat Treatment:

• Solution Treatment (Annealing): Heat to 1090-1175°C followed by rapid cooling. This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.

Welding:

• 904L can be welded using all standard techniques. Due to its fully austenitic solidification, there is a risk of heat cracking, particularly in constrained weldments, so caution is advised. Pre-heating is unnecessary, and post-weld heat treatment is generally not required. Grade 904L rods and electrodes are prequalified for welding under AS 1554.6.

Fabrication:

• Being a high purity, low sulfur grade, 904L may not machine as easily as grades designed for machinability. Nevertheless, conventional methods can be used. Achieving a small bend radius is straightforward, primarily done cold. While subsequent annealing is usually not needed, it should be considered for applications in severe stress corrosion cracking conditions.

Typical Applications:

• Common applications for 904L stainless steel include processing plants for sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids, pulp and paper processing, gas scrubbing plant components, seawater cooling equipment, oil refinery components, and wires in electrostatic precipitators.

Specified Properties:

• As per ASTM A240M, the specified properties apply to flat rolled products like plates, sheets, and coils. Similar, though not identical, properties are listed in specifications for other products such as pipes, tubes, and bars.
