Duplex 2205 Round Bar is a high-performance duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel comprising 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that is double that of conventional austenitic grades. This exceptional material not only delivers outstanding fatigue strength but also excels in resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion even under the most demanding conditions.
Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, the edges may be significantly cooler than the bulk, increasing the risk of cracking in these cooler regions.
Duplex 2205 demonstrates excellent formability across various fabrications. However, its high strength can present challenges. Even with sufficient equipment power, the high strength of the grade necessitates allowances for greater spring-back.
Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 presents a modest challenge in machining compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel. It demands higher cutting forces, thereby accelerating tool wear. To achieve optimal results, consider these machining guidelines: A) Employ a robust, rigid machine with a very strong tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is only as long as necessary, maintaining a sharp edge on the carbide while offering adequate strength; D) Plan the machining sequence to ensure the depth of cut consistently penetrates below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
