CORROSION RESISTANCE:

• 316 stainless steel boasts superior resistance compared to 304, excelling in a wide array of atmospheric environments and various corrosive media, thanks to its higher chromium and molybdenum content.

HEAT RESISTANCE:

• Offers excellent oxidation resistance during intermittent service up to 1600°F (870°C) and continuous service up to 1700°F (925°C).
• Grade 316L provides enhanced resistance to carbide precipitation.

WELDING CHARACTERISTICS:

• 316 stainless steel exhibits outstanding weldability through all conventional fusion methods, with or without the use of filler metals.
• For maximum corrosion resistance, heavy welded sections in Grade 316 should undergo post-weld annealing, although this is not necessary for Grade 316L.

HEAT TREATMENT:

• The annealing temperature range for 316 stainless steel is 1900 to 2100°F (1038 to 1149°C).
• This material cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Special attention is needed to account for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

• Most manufacturers recommend a maximum forging temperature between 2100°F and 2300°F.
• Do not forge below 1700°F (927°C).
• Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved if the forgings undergo a final anneal.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

• Due to their extreme toughness and ductility, 316/316L types can be readily cold worked through processes like roll forming, swaging, cold heading, deep drawing,
  bending, etc., with ease.
• Severely cold-formed parts should be annealed to relieve stress.

MACHINABILITY:

• Type 316/316L is somewhat more challenging to machine than Type 304 due to its robustness.
• These grades produce tough and strong chip characteristics.
• It is recommended to use chip breakers and curlers.
• Utilize tools as large as possible and copious amounts of cutting fluid.
• Consider heavy positive feeds at low speeds because 316/316L work hardens rapidly.
