A global leader in stainless steel pipe fabrication services Martensitic 410 stainless steel pipe, a non-stainless steel, can be toughened by a 'quench and temper' heat treatment. With a minimum chromium content of 11.5%, it resists corrosion, performing best when tempered and polished post-hardening. This general-purpose grade is hardened yet machinable, ideal for applications demanding moderate heat, corrosion resistance, and high strength. Despite its high hardness, some properties are compromised, such as poor weldability necessitating a final heat treatment. While martensitic steels have lower corrosion resistance than austenitic steels, their utility is limited by reduced ductility at sub-freezing temperatures and weakened strength at higher temperatures due to over-tempering. The 410 stainless steel pipe, a 12% chromium martensitic alloy, can be heat-treated to yield various mechanical properties, offering high strength and hardness alongside commendable corrosion resistance. Ductile, forgeable, and magnetic in all conditions, it is not suitable for environments prone to severe corrosion.

Quick Response

  • Corrosion Resistance
    410 stainless steel displays commendable resistance to dry air, freshwater, mild bases and acids, foods, steam, and hot gases.
    For maximum heat and corrosion resistance, 410 stainless steel must be hardened. Optimal performance is achieved when the surface is smooth.
    Heat Resistance
    410 stainless steel exhibits good resistance to scaling up to about 650°C, though it is not generally recommended for use at temperatures between 400 and 580°C due to reduced mechanical properties.
    Heat Treatment
    Fully anneal at 815-900°C, followed by a slow furnace cool to 600°C, then air cool.
    Process anneal at 650-760°C and air cool.
    Welding
    410 stainless steel is easily welded by all standard methods, but requires preheating to 150-260°C and post-weld annealing to reduce the likelihood of cracking.
