Type 201 stainless steel is austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese steel, engineered to conserve nickel. As a cost-effective alternative to Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, Type 201 substitutes nickel with manganese and nitrogen. While it can't be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. It is non-magnetic in its annealed state but becomes magnetic after cold working.
