Type 409 Stainless Steel (UNS S40900) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that boasts superior oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. ASTM A240 classifies Type 409 stainless steel into three subcategories: UNS S40910, UNS S40920, and UNS S40930, each with distinct Ti or Nb stabilization specifications. Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, any of these compositions may be supplied as UNS S40900. This material is manufactured with enhanced formability properties referred to as "High Performance" or "Ultra Form" in the industry.

Grade 409
- Grade 409, a titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel, stands out as a general-purpose chromium stainless steel. Primarily utilized for automotive exhaust systems, it excels in mechanical qualities, corrosion resistance, and weldability, especially at high temperatures, making it a top choice for demanding applications.
- ASTM requirements, including ASTM A240M for flat-rolled steel, now categorize S40910, S40920, and S40930 as "sub-grades" instead of the generic Grade 409.
- These sub-grades are stabilized to different extents using titanium, niobium, or a combination of both. Any of these can be certified as S40900 (Grade 409). ASTM A268M specifies the standard Grade 409 for tube applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Grade 409 exhibits robust resistance to both atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion. In most environments, a light surface rust forms that prevents further corrosion, though it may be unsuitable for cosmetic purposes. It offers corrosion resistance comparable to 3CR12 and 12% chromium martensitic grades (410), but is less resistant than the 17% chromium grade 430.
Heat Resistance
- Grade 409 resists scaling in intermittent service up to 815°C and in continuous service up to 675°C, although these temperatures can vary based on the specific service environment.
Heat Treatment
- The annealing process involves heating to 790-900 degrees Celsius, followed by air cooling. This grade cannot be toughened via heat treatment.
Welding
- Grade 409 is easy to weld, with a recommended pre-heat of 150-260°C. While Grade 409 or 430 electrodes or filler rods can be used, welding with Grade 309 rods or electrodes is pre-qualified per AS 1554.6, resulting in a more ductile weld.
- Post-weld annealing at 760-815°C enhances weld ductility.
Welding small sections does not require post-weld annealing. Automotive exhaust tubing is generally welded without filler metal (autogenously).
To mitigate the effects of grain formation, it's crucial to weld with minimal heat.
Typical Applications
Grade 409 is widely used in automotive exhaust systems, including catalytic converters and mufflers.
Specified Properties
- ASTM A268M outlines the parameters for annealed Grade 409 tubing, while ASTM A240M specifies the composition for coil and sheet applications. Specifications for other items may feature similar but not identical properties.
FORMING:
- Grade 409 stainless steel can be effortlessly cut, blanked, stretch-formed, and drawn. Its formability characteristics closely resemble those of carbon steel.
