Surface Description of Stainless Steel Plate

Finish Designation Method and degree of finish
No.1 After hot rolling, heat treatment, pickling or other equivalent treatment is applied.
No.2D Annealing and pickling are performed after cold rolling; material is soft with surface of silver-white luster; used for general applications and deep drawing.
No.2B After 2D finish, skin pass rolling is performed to obtain a more suitable luster; the surface becomes very exquisite; used for general applications.
No.3 Intermediate 100-120 grit finish; used for applications in which surface polishing is performed after shaping.
No.4 General 150-180 grit finish; used for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#240 240 grit finish; used when a finer finish than No. 4 is required; typically for restaurants and kitchen equipment and tools.
#320 320 grit finish polished product.
HL This finish is performed by continuous linear polishing using an abrasive of appropriate grain size; mainly used for architectural applications.

General Properties
The Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate from Jiangsu Daxun Alloy Co., Ltd. is a premium hardenable martensitic stainless steel bar, representing a refined derivative of Alloy 410. With a minimum chromium content of 12%, it offers substantial corrosion resistance. Compared to Alloy 410, Alloy 420 features a higher carbon content, which significantly enhances its strength and hardness. Post annealing, it displays exceptional ductility, but can be hardened to a remarkable minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the top hardness among the 12% chromium grades. While its hardening properties make welding uncommon, it remains feasible. Martensitic stainless steels, including Alloy 420, were engineered for superior hardness, though this may affect other properties. Its corrosion resistance is not as high as that of standard austenitic grades, and its usability is constrained at sub-zero temperatures due to ductility loss and at high temperatures due to over-tempering-induced strength loss. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the steel is hardened and the surface is meticulously ground or polished.
Specifications: UNS S42000.
Applications:
420 stainless steel is extensively utilized in scenarios demanding both excellent corrosion resistance and high hardness. It is not recommended for applications exceeding 800°F (427°C) due to rapid hardening and diminished corrosion resistance. Some notable applications of the 420 alloy include:

Corrosion resistance:
While less resistant than austenitic grades and 17% chromium ferritic alloys,
the alloy exhibits good resistance to atmospheric conditions, foods, fresh water, and mild acids when in a hardened state.
However, this resistance is notably reduced when the metal is in an annealed state.
Surface finish smooth
Heat resistance:
The alloy is not recommended for use above its relevant tempering temperatures due to a significant reduction in mechanical properties.
The scaling temperature is approximately 1202°F (650°C).
Machinability
The alloy is characterized by hard, elongated chip buildup.
Its machinability is similar to that of some high-carbon tool steels.
Welding
Welding is generally avoided due to its air hardening characteristics
However, if welding is necessary, preheat to 300-400°F before welding
and temper for 2 hours post-welding.
Hot Working
A gradual increase in temperature to 1400°F, followed by heating to 2000-2200°F, is recommended
Post-furnace work, it is essential to cool the material slowly to prevent cracking.
Reheating is necessary to maintain the working temperature above 1600°F.
Cold Working
The alloy withstands only light cold working.
Aggressive forming can lead to cracking.
Annealing
Annealing should be conducted at 1550-1650°F (843-900°C)
and the furnace should be allowed to cool gradually.
Tempering
Tempering should be performed at 300-400°F
and air cooling ensures maximum hardness and corrosion resistance.
Hardening
For hardening, soak at 1850-1950°F, followed by quenching in hot oil.
