How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?
- The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors the processes used for other high-alloy steels. The journey begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and alloyed to the desired composition. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. Here, crucial processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases occur, setting the stage for high-performance steel production.
- During the AOD phase, nitrogen is typically incorporated into the steel to enhance its properties. The steel then moves to the ladle furnace for further refinement, including the adjustment of inclusions to perfect its composition.
- After these initial steps, the refined molten steel is directed to the casting phase. This can involve producing large solitary ingots or continuously cast blooms. These solid forms are subsequently reheated and subjected to forging or rolling to achieve the desired thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, the material undergoes solution annealing, followed by rapid cooling through a water quenching process.
