The 904 alloy (N08904) stainless steel is a high-alloy austenitic material designed to withstand severe corrosion. Its robust corrosion resistance makes it an excellent choice for demanding environments.
904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel. Enhanced with copper, it offers remarkable resistance to strong reducing acids such as sulfuric acid. Additionally, it resists stress corrosion, cracking, and crevice corrosion. Non-magnetic, 904L stainless steel boasts exceptional formability, toughness, and welding capabilities. Its composition includes high levels of costly elements like molybdenum and nickel.
904L grade stainless steel excels in resisting hot seawater and chloride attacks. The high nickel content in its composition provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Copper addition enhances its resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing agents, whether in corrosive or mild environments. The corrosion resistance of 904L grade steel positions it between super austenitic steels with 6% molybdenum and standard 316L austenitic steel. Compared to grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, 904L offers superior resistance. To achieve peak stress corrosion cracking resistance in sensitive settings, solution treatment after cold working is recommended.

Grade 904L stainless steel tubes exhibit exceptional resistance to warm seawater and chloride attacks. The high nickel content contributes significantly to its robust stress corrosion cracking resistance. Additionally, the presence of copper enhances its durability against sulphuric acid and other reducing agents, making it reliable in both aggressive and mild conditions.
The corrosion resistance of grade 904L sits between super austenitic grades with 6% molybdenum content and standard 316L austenitic grades. While it offers less resistance than grades 304L and 310L, which lack molybdenum, solution treatment post-cold working can maximize its stress corrosion cracking resistance in critical environments.
Grade 904L stainless steel demonstrates commendable oxidation resistance. However, its structural integrity tends to diminish at elevated temperatures, particularly surpassing 400°C.
Grade 904L stainless steel can undergo solution heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 1090 to 1175°C, followed by rapid cooling. Such thermal treatments are effective for hardening this steel grade.
Welding grade 904L stainless steel is feasible using all standard methods. It does not necessitate pre-heat or post-weld treatments. Hot cracking may occur in constrained weldments. Electrodes and rods tailored for grade 904L, compliant with AS 1554.6, are recommended.
Grade 904L stainless steel tubes are characterized by high purity and low *** content. They are compatible with conventional machining methods and can be bent to a small radius under cold conditions. Post-fabrication annealing is generally unnecessary unless the steel is subjected to severe stress corrosion conditions.
