Our 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material showcases outstanding corrosion resistance across a broad spectrum of corrosive environments. While it maintains some resilience to salt water in cooler southern waters, its performance in warmer tropical waters may be limited. Comparatively, the corrosion resistance of our 431 Round Bar Material aligns closely with, or is slightly inferior to, that of 304 Grade Material. It delivers optimal results with a smooth surface in hardened and tempered conditions.
Exhibits resistance to scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for applications exceeding the relevant tempering temperature due to potential mechanical property degradation.
Full anneal is not practical for this grade as it hardens even when cooled slowly. For process anneal, heat to 620-660°C followed by air cooling is recommended.
Hardening is achieved by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 1/2 hour, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may be beneficial for complex parts or pre-hardened components. Tempering should be done according to mechanical requirements at temperatures indicated in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C as it results in reduced impact toughness, though this effect is less pronounced in this grade compared to other martensitic grades.
Welding poses challenges due to the risk of cracking. A pre-heat of 200-300°C is advisable before welding. While Grade 410 filler rod can be utilized, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds, provided matching properties are not essential. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is recommended.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, if hardened beyond 30HRC, machining becomes more problematic. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances achievable machining speeds and tool life.
Versatile applications include nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products under ASTM A276. Similar, though not identical, properties are specified for other products such as plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
