STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803.
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3.
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ.
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462.
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance, outperforming 316 and 316L in most conditions.
- The alloy's composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic environments.
- Resilient to chloride stress corrosion cracking, maintaining integrity at temperatures up to 302°F (150°C).
- The ferritic phase in Duplex 2205 enhances its performance in caustic conditions.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 demonstrates commendable oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement if exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short periods. Thus, it is not recommended for use above this threshold.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Duplex 2205 offers commendable weldability.
- Should generally not be welded without filler metal, as it can lead to excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Optimal annealing temperature ranges between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- While it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, Duplex 2205 does work-harden.
- Special considerations are required to counteract the higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Leading Duplex 2205 manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, edges may cool more rapidly than the bulk, heightening the risk of cracking in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 exhibits impressive formability across diverse fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present challenges, often requiring adjustments even if the equipment is adequately powerful. Special considerations must be made for the heightened spring-back effect due to the grade's robust strength.
MACHINABILITY
Processing Duplex 2205 is marginally more challenging than working with 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Enhanced cutting forces are necessary, leading to accelerated tool wear. Essential machining guidelines include: A) Employ robust, stable machinery with extremely firm mounting for tools and workpieces, B) Reduce vibration by minimizing tool extension, C) Utilize a nose radius on the tool no larger than necessary for carbide tools with sharp edges while maintaining adequate strength, and D) Plan machining sequences to ensure each cut penetrates beneath the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 stainless steel coils
- Type 2205 is a duplex stainless steel combining austenitic and ferritic structures, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen to enhance performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. Its mixed austenite/ferrite microstructure and alloying elements offer excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and chlorinated crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 maintains acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C but may become brittle if exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for prolonged periods. This stainless steel variant is versatile, suitable for numerous applications in strip, coil, and sheet forms.
What are the commonly used surfaces of stainless steel coils?
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil varies with the cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatments. Available surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, among others:
- NO.1: This surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip. Designed to eliminate the black oxide scale formed during these processes, the No. 1 surface is silvery-white and matte. It is predominantly used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries where high surface gloss is unnecessary, such as the alcohol, chemical industries, and large container manufacturing.
- 2B: Distinct from the 2D finish, the 2B surface is brightened using a light rolling process. This treatment achieves a surface roughness Ra value of 0.1 to 0.5μm, suitable for various processing types. The 2B finish is highly adaptable, making it ideal for chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and architectural applications like building curtain walls.
- TR hard surface: TR stainless steel, or hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, used for high-strength and hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The method harnesses the work-hardening properties of austenitic stainless steel, enhancing strength and hardness through cold working like rolling. Unlike the 2B surface, the hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few to several percent, without subsequent annealing, resulting in the characteristic TR hard surface of the cold-rolled material.
- Re-rolled bright 2H: Following the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at a speed of 60-80m/min. This meticulous process ensures the surface finish achieves a 2H re-rolled bright quality, setting a new standard of excellence.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface offers superior polishing results and a brighter finish compared to No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by a sanding belt with a grit size of 150-180#. Surface roughness (Ra) is meticulously measured between 0.2 and 1.5μm. The versatile No. 4 finish is ideal for applications including restaurant and cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decoration, containers, and much more.
- HL: The HL finish, known for its hairline appearance, is defined by the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. While the Chinese GB3280 standard offers less clarity, the HL surface is highly sought after for architectural applications such as elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering an elegant touch.
- No. 6: The No. 6 surface takes the No. 4 finish to the next level, polished with a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive as specified in the GB2477 standard. This results in a surface that boasts a good metallic luster, softness, minimal reflection, and no imaging-perfect for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary applications.
- BA: BA, or Bright Annealed, is a surface finish achieved through bright heat treatment post-cold rolling. This annealing process in a protective atmosphere prevents oxidation, retaining the natural gloss of the cold-rolled surface. Polished with a high-precision smooth roller, the surface brightness is significantly enhanced, with surface roughness evaluated at 0.05-0.1μm. BA surfaces are ideal for use in food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative items.
- No. 8: The No. 8 mirror finish offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles, often referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry. BA material serves as the raw material, requiring only polishing to achieve a breathtaking mirror finish. This superior surface is frequently used for building entrances and interior decorations, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.
