CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Withstands corrosive attacks better than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.
  • Comparable to Alloy 304 in most media.
  • Exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance in several chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • However, it is vulnerable to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant sea water over extended periods.

WELDABILITY:

  • It can be successfully welded using most common fusion and resistance methods.
  • However, it should not be welded using oxyacetylene techniques.
  • Generally, pre-heating is not required for welding.
  • Note: Inter-pass temperature must be limited to 248°F to maintain quality.
  • Enhanced toughness is achieved in the weld after undergoing complete heat treatment.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Offers excellent resistance to oxidation, maintaining integrity up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Long-term exposure to high temperatures may lead to reduced toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150 / 2200°F and hold for half hour per inch of thickness.
  • The optimal temperature range for hot forming is 650-900°F, when the steel is still in its austenitic phase.
  • To ensure optimal conditions for hardening, forgings must be re-heat treated at 1875-1925°F.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to achieve grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild operations due to its hardness in the annealed (solution treated) condition.
  • For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent possible cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often required.
  • Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is recommended to improve stress corrosion resistance post cold forming.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening states.

Mechanical Properties

  • Type 17-4PH stainless steel exhibits outstanding mechanical properties. It is an excellent choice for applications requiring high strength and hardness combined with corrosion resistance. Furthermore, it is more cost-effective than many high-nickel non-ferrous alloys.
