CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our Alloy 17-4 stainless steel achieves superior resistance against corrosive attacks compared to standard hardenable stainless steels.
- Its corrosion resistance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most environments.
- It is particularly effective in resisting corrosion in chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- However, it may be susceptible to crevice or pitting attacks if exposed to stagnant sea water for extended periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Expertly welded using the most common fusion and resistance methods, ensuring superior bonding and durability.
- It's advisable to avoid joining this material using oxyacetylene welding to maintain its integrity.
- No pre-heating is generally required, providing ease and efficiency in your welding operations.
- Ensure the inter-pass temperature is carefully limited to 248°F to maintain material properties.
- Achieve better toughness in the weld by performing a complete heat treatment post-welding.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Boasts excellent resistance to oxidation, maintaining stability up to approximately 1100°F.
- Be cautious: long-term exposure to elevated temperatures may reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- Ideal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F, where the steel remains austenitic.
- For optimal hardening, re-heat treat the forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool the forgings below 90°F to ensure proper grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- In the annealed condition, Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild operations due to its inherent hardness.
- For severe cold working, heat treat to condition H1150 to prevent potential cracking.
- A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary.
- Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature after cold forming is recommended to improve stress corrosion resistance.
MACHINABILITY:
- This alloy can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardened conditions, offering versatility.
