General Properties
The Alloy 420 Stainless Steel Plate is a premium, hardenable martensitic stainless steel bar, evolved from the robust Alloy 410. Like its predecessor, it boasts a chromium content of at least 12%, ensuring dependable corrosion resistance. This enhanced stainless steel variant, enriched with more carbon than Alloy 410, is designed to amplify strength and hardness. Post-annealing, it retains good ductility but is capable of hardening to a formidable minimum Rockwell hardness of 50 HRC, the highest among the 12% chromium grades. While welding Alloy 420 is uncommon due to its hardening traits, it remains a possibility. Martensitic stainless steels, including Alloy 420, are engineered for exceptional hardness, albeit with some trade-offs in other characteristics. Its corrosion resistance, though commendable, doesn't quite match that of standard austenitic grades, and its operational range is somewhat constrained by a reduction in ductility at sub-zero temperatures and a loss of strength when over-tempered at high temperatures. Optimal corrosion resistance is achieved when the alloy is hardened and the surface meticulously ground or polished.
