CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 offers exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking, making it highly reliable for demanding applications.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code specifies an upper temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure above this limit leads to embrittlement, underlining the importance of adhering to these guidelines.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 possesses more than double the strength of conventional austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It is also available in a cold-worked state with a yield strength exceeding 160 ksi, retaining excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 can be effectively cold-formed, though it has a high work-hardening rate, often necessitating intermediate anneals. Post-forming annealing is recommended to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance, ensuring the highest performance standards.
Our forming capabilities are unmatched, featuring cutting-edge extrusion and cold working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We proudly house one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings, ensuring top-tier quality and precision.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe is a superior duplex ferritic-austenitic alloy enriched with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. Celebrated as the most versatile duplex stainless steel, this grade exhibits a yield strength double that of standard austenitic steels. It also boasts exceptional fatigue strength and stands resilient against stress corrosion cracking, alongside impressive resistance to crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the harshest environments.
For optimal hot forming, manufacturers recommend a maximum temperature range between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). Ensure the workpiece is uniformly heated to avoid the risk of edge cracks due to cooler temperatures.
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube demonstrates excellent formability across various manufacturing processes. However, its high strength can pose challenges. Even with robust equipment, the pronounced springback due to the high strength of this grade must be carefully considered.
While Duplex 2205 is somewhat more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, it is manageable with the right approach. It requires higher cutting forces, leading to faster tool wear. Here are essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine equipped with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Maintain short tool extensions to minimize vibration; C) Keep the tool nose radius as short as possible to ensure a sharp edge without compromising strength; D) Plan the machining sequence so that each cut depth remains below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
