Type 904L is a premium high-alloy austenitic stainless steel celebrated for its exceptional corrosion resistance. The 904L alloy (UNS N08904) is a super austenitic stainless steel suitable for various process environments, offering moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its rich composition of high chromium and nickel, combined with molybdenum and copper, ensures superior to outstanding resistance against corrosion. With a highly alloyed chemistry comprising 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum, 904L surpasses 316L and 317L molybdenum-enhanced stainless steels in resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and general corrosion. Originally designed to endure dilute sulfuric acid conditions, 904L also demonstrates resilience against most organic acids and several inorganic acids, including hot phosphoric acid. The 904L alloy is easily weldable and manageable using conventional shop fabrication methods.

What are 904L's best qualities?
- The 904L stainless steel grade is renowned for its low carbon content and substantial copper composition, which enhances its resistance to potent acids like sulphuric acid. Its high nickel concentration offers superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, it is exceptionally resilient against crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking that may affect other steel types. This adaptability makes it ideal for various challenging environments, including exposure to warm waters and chlorides, making it suitable for both moderate and harsh conditions.
- 904L stainless steel boasts remarkable heat resistance, enduring temperatures as high as 400 degrees Celsius. It can be heat treated at temperatures from 1090 to 1175 degrees Celsius, followed by rapid cooling. This heat treatment process is optimal for hardening 904L steel.
- Due to its unique composition, 904L stainless steel is nonmagnetic. It excels in weldability, formability, and toughness across diverse applications.
- 904L steel can be effortlessly welded using conventional methods, with no requirement for pre-heat or post-weld heat treatments.
What is 904L used for?
As previously mentioned, 904L stainless steel is a preferred material in watch construction, appreciated for its high purity and low sulfur content. Its applications extend to several industrial sectors, including:

Fabrication Data
- Alloy 904L can be seamlessly welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices.
Cold Forming
- 904L stainless steel is highly ductile and easily formable. However, the addition of molybdenum and nitrogen necessitates more robust processing equipment compared to standard 304/304L grades.
Hot Forming
- Hot working procedures for 904L require temperatures between 1562°F and 2102°F (850-1150°C). Typically, hot working should be followed by solution annealing and quenching. If hot forming ceases above 2012°F (1100°C) and the material is quenched immediately, further heat treatment may not be needed. It is crucial to quench the entire workpiece from temperatures above 2012°F (1100°C). If partial heating or cooling occurs below this temperature or if cooling is too slow, hot working should always be followed by solution annealing and quenching. The recommended solution annealing temperature range is 1940-2084°F (1060-1140°C).
Machining
- Due to its cold work hardening rate, Alloy 904L is less machinable than 410 and 304 stainless steels.
Welding
- Alloy 904L is compatible with most conventional welding methods. Its austenitic plate materials offer a uniform structure and balanced alloying element distribution. During welding, elements such as molybdenum, chromium, and nickel redistribute within the cast structure, which can reduce corrosion resistance in some cases. However, segregation is less pronounced in 904L, which is typically welded with filler metal of the same composition as the base metal but can also be welded without filler metal.
- Welding consumables for 904L include 20 25 CuL covered electrodes and 20 25 CuL wire.
