CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Our products withstand corrosive attacks better than any of the standard hardenable stainless steels.
- They are comparable to Alloy 304 in most media, providing reliable performance.
- Our materials are corrosion resistant in various chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
- However, they may be subject to crevice or pitting attack if exposed to stagnant seawater for extended periods.
WELDABILITY:
- Successfully welded using most standard fusion and resistance techniques.
- Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
- Typically, no pre-heating is needed.
- The inter-pass temperature must be carefully controlled and kept under 248°F.
- Achieve better toughness in welds through complete heat treatment processes.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:
- Boasts excellent resistance to oxidation up to approximately 1100°F.
- Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:
- For forging, uniformly heat to 2150 / 2200°F, holding for half an hour per inch of thickness.
- The ideal temperature range for hot forming is between 650-900°F, while the steel remains austenitic.
- To optimize hardening operations, re-heat treat forgings at 1875-1925°F.
- Cool forgings to below 90°F to ensure grain refinement.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:
- Alloy 17-4 is best suited for mild operations due to its hard nature in the annealed condition.
- For severe cold working, heat treat the material to condition H1150 to prevent possible cracking.
- A bend radius greater than 7T is typically required.
- Improve stress corrosion resistance after cold forming by re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature.
MACHINABILITY:
- Can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.

- Type 17-4PH stainless steel offers exceptional mechanical properties. Ideal for applications needing high strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance, it is cost-effective compared to many high-nickel, non-ferrous alloys.
