Key Features of Grade 5 Titanium Tubes

Ti-6Al4V Grade 5 Titanium Alloy Tubes are the most commercially popular of all Titanium alloys, offering exceptional strength and toughness. Grade 5 Titanium alloy is known for its excellent welding and processing capabilities:

  • High Strength Titanium Alloy
  • Heat Treatable
  • Excellent Ductility
  • Superior Machinability
  • Exceptional Weldability

We stock and sell Grade 5 Titanium Alloy Seamless Tubes, Forged Seamless Tubes, Welded Tubes, etc.

As a premier titanium alloy tube manufacturer and supplier in China, Daxun Alloy delivers high-quality Grade 5 titanium pipes globally, earning accolades across numerous projects.

Ti 6Al-4V (Grade 5 Titanium) is the most widely used titanium alloy, making up over 50% of total titanium usage. Typically used in the annealed state, it operates up to 400°C (750°F). Ti 6Al/4V is welded with matching or ELI filler wire and boasts significantly higher strength compared to commercial pure titanium tubes, alongside better stiffness and thermal properties (excluding thermal conductivity). The alloy's thermal conductivity is about 60% lower than CP titanium. Heat treatment enhances its already excellent formability, low density, and superior corrosion resistance.

This grade perfectly balances strength, corrosion resistance, weldability, and machinability, making it ideal for applications in military aircraft, aviation, rocket parts, precision-guided components, armor parts, ship equipment, military vacuum equipment, and more. The closely related 6-4ELI version is used in surgical implants. Generally supplied in the annealed state, it suits applications up to 400°C, enhancing ductility and toughness under cold working conditions. As a versatile titanium alloy, Ti 6Al-4V titanium seamless tubes offer outstanding properties in temperatures ranging from -210°C to 400°C. Grade 5 titanium alloy tubes are the most commercialized of all titanium alloys, combining exceptional strength with toughness and excellent welding and processing characteristics.

  • Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)

INTRODUCTION

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 Alloy Tube (UNS R56400) is the premier choice among titanium alloys. This remarkable duplex alpha+beta titanium alloy, stabilized with aluminum and vanadium, demonstrates exceptional strength even at cryogenic temperatures up to 800°F (427°C). Renowned for its versatility, ATI Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy undergoes processes such as annealing, solution treatment, and ageing. This alloy is indispensable in the aerospace and military sectors, finding critical applications in jet engine compressor blades, discs, rings, fuselage and space capsule components, pressure containers, *** cases, helicopter rotor hubs, fasteners, and high-strength forgings.
  • The alloy is meticulously crafted through initial melting using vacuum arc (VAR), electron beam (EB), or plasma arc hearth melting (PAM) techniques. Subsequent remelting is conducted in one or two vacuum arc steps to ensure purity and performance.

SPECIFICATIONS

• ASTM B338 - Standard for heat-treatable titanium tubes
• AMS 4928 - Specifications for annealed forgings and forging stock
• AMS 4965 - Standards for solution treated and aged forgings
• AMS 4967 - Guidelines for annealed, heat-treatable forgings

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Melting Range: 2,800-3,000°F (1,538 - 1,649°C)
  • Density: 0.160 lbs/cu. in.; 4.47 gm/cc
  • Beta Transus Temperature: 1830°F (± 25°); 999°C (± 14°)

HEAT TREATMENT

  • Annealing is achieved at temperatures between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C) to enhance hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance.
  • DAXUN 6-4™, Grade 5 Alloy offers versatile heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, followed by air or furnace cooling.

  • Optimal properties are achieved in the solution-treated and aged condition, particularly for small cross-sections that are rapidly quenched.
Larger section sizes and/or delays in quenching may result in properties that are below the optimum levels.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness ranges between Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.

FORGEABILITY/ FORMABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy tubes are ideally forged at 1,750°F (954°C), concluding at an end forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A reduction of at least 35% is recommended for optimal results.
  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy, renowned for its robust performance, poses challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. However, extreme forming operations such as bending or stretching can be effectively executed on annealed material at elevated temperatures reaching 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. Creep forming is another viable technique for hot sizing or forming, operational within a temperature range of 1,000 to 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).

MACHINABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is machinable using techniques akin to those employed for austenitic stainless steels, characterized by slow speeds, substantial feeds, and firm
tooling, along with the extensive application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to ensure optimal results.

WELDABILITY

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 Alloy Titanium Tube showcases excellent weldability in both annealed and solution-treated, as well as partially aged conditions, with aging executed during post-weld heat treatment.
  • It is imperative to take precautions to prevent contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best conducted in an inert gas-filled chamber or by employing an inert gas tail shield to protect the molten metal and adjacent hot zones. Techniques such as spot welding, seam welding, and flash welding can be performed without requiring a protective environment.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

  • DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy is susceptible to hydrogen contamination due to improper pickling and can also absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes such as forging, heat treatment, and brazing. This contamination could impair ductility, affecting notch sensitivity and forming capabilities.

Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Pipe - Grade 5 Titanium Tube

Titanium Alloy - (UNS R56400)
Introduction
