Type 201 stainless steel is an innovative austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese alloy designed to conserve nickel. As a cost-effective alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels like 301 and 304, its nickel content is replaced with manganese and nitrogen. Though it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, it achieves high tensile strength through cold working. Type 201 is non-magnetic in the annealed state but becomes magnetic after cold working. This mid-range stainless steel is widely used in appliances, cookers, sinks, kitchen utensils, catering equipment, automotive parts, fixtures, carriages, and window trim. Despite its structural strength, it may not always be suitable for outdoor applications due to its susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly from seawater.
