SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing is performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy offers versatile heat treatment options. - 1. Anneal: 1,275-1,400°F (691-760°C) for ½ to 2 hours, with air or furnace cooling.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000-1,200°F (538-649°C) for 1 to 8 hours, with air or furnace cooling.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675-1,750°F (913-954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975-1,025°F (524-552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, air cool.
In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in less optimal properties.
HARDNESS
Typical hardness in the annealed condition ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while in the solution and aged condition, it ranges from Rockwell C 35-39.
Forgeability/Formability
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bars are forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum reduction of 35% is recommended for achieving optimal properties.
- Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents challenges for forming at room temperature, even when annealed. For severe operations like bending or stretching, annealed material can be processed at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical integrity. Hot sizing or forming is achievable through creep forming within the 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C) range.
Machinability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be efficiently machined using austenitic stainless steel methods. It requires slow machining speeds, high feed rates, robust tools, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids to achieve optimal results.
Weldability
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both annealed and partially aged conditions, with post-weld heat treatment enhancing the material through aging. Care must be taken to shield the material from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen contamination during the welding process. Fusion welding should be conducted in an inert gas environment or with inert gas shielding the molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be performed without a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon contamination during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance to a wide variety of environments, including:
- Seawater and brines
- Inorganic salts
- Moist *** gas
- Alkaline solutions
- Oxidizing acids
- Organics and organic acids
- Sulfur compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium exhibits superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not undergo crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80 °C (176°F), regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium shows excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments.
Even at high velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), seawater shows negligible impact on the material. The presence of abrasive particles like sand has a minimal effect on corrosion.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium exhibits no significant hydrogen absorption when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically occurs only under the following conditions:
- pH levels are < 3 or > 12
- Temperature exceeds 176F (80C)
- A mechanism exists for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or an impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys uniquely resist all forms of microbiologically influenced corrosion. While they are non-toxic to marine organisms, biofouling in seawater can occur. This can be controlled through chlorination or by increasing water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium retains its fatigue performance in seawater, showing no decrease. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is positioned toward the noble end, near stainless steels, typically acting as the cathode when paired with other metals. Titanium itself remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but can accelerate corrosion in the other metal. When coupled with more noble metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod, unlike many other materials, retains its fatigue properties in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent in both air and seawater environments.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable, provided certain precautions are taken. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must be used on both the OD and ID of the rod. The material must also be free from grease or oil contamination.
Grade 2 Titanium Rod is generally welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input should be used to minimize the heat-affected zone. Typically, Titanium Rods are not post-weld heat treated.
