The Premier Authority in Commercially Pure Titanium Rod Manufacturing

Grade 2 Titanium Rod stands as the premier choice among titanium alloy rods, known for its outstanding strength-to-density ratio, making it ideal for weight-sensitive applications. As a CP (commercially pure) titanium alloy, it harmonizes strength with weight, providing an optimal balance of strength and ductility. Renowned for its high impact strength and effortless weldability, this alloy excels in corrosion resistance under oxidizing conditions, alkaline media, brine solutions, weakly reducing environments, and wet ***. Additionally, it demonstrates exceptional resistance to seawater and saline solutions. With its low density, superior strength-to-weight ratio, and remarkable corrosion resistance, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is the ultimate solution for diverse applications.

SPECIFICATIONS

AMS 4928 - Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)

AMS 4965 - Bars, Forgings (Solution treated and aged)

AMS 4967 - Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)

HEAT TREATMENT

  • For applications requiring high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be conducted at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy is versatile in its heat treatment options.
  • 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F; (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F; (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool
  • 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F; (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench
  • 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F; (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool

In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections ensures optimal properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in reduced properties.

HARDNESS

Typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.

Forgeability/Formability

  • The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is best forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal properties, a minimum reduction of 35% is recommended.
  • Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar presents formidable challenges in forming at room temperature, even when annealed. For demanding operations like bending or stretching, annealed material can endure temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical integrity. Hot sizing or forming is achievable through creep forming within 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).

Machinability

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be machined using techniques suitable for austenitic stainless steel, involving slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and copious amounts of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.

Weldability

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is highly weldable in both the annealed and solution-partially aged conditions, with aging achievable post-weld heat treatment. It is crucial to avoid contamination from oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding is best performed in an inert gas environment, ensuring protection for molten metal and adjacent heated zones. Spot, seam, and flash welding can be executed without a protective atmosphere.

Special Considerations

Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to hydrogen contamination from improper pickling and to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon contamination during forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, adversely affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod

Corrosion Resistance

Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.

General Corrosion

The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media are shown in Table 1. CP titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, including:

  • Seawater and Brines
  • Inorganic Salts
  • Moist *** Gas
  • Alkaline Solutions
  • Oxidizing Acids
  • Organics and Organic Acids
  • Sulfur Compounds

Crevice Corrosion

CP titanium offers superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium will not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80 °C (176°F) regardless of pH, even under super chlorinated conditions.

Stress Corrosion Cracking

Grade 2 titanium provides excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and is immune to SCC in seawater.

Erosion Corrosion

Titanium demonstrates unparalleled resistance to erosion in dynamic environments.
In seawater with velocities reaching up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), titanium exhibits minimal degradation. The addition of abrasive particles, such as sand, has a negligible impact on its corrosion resistance.

Hydrogen Embrittlement

Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen from seawater, even under elevated temperatures. Hydrogen absorption typically only occurs when all of the following conditions are present:

  1. The pH level is < 3 or > 12
  2. The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C)
  3. There is a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.

Bio-Corrosion

Titanium alloys exhibit remarkable immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although they are non-toxic to marine organisms, allowing for biofouling in seawater, this can be mitigated through chlorination or increased water velocity in heat exchangers.

Corrosion Fatigue

Titanium stands out among materials by maintaining its fatigue performance in seawater. Both fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates are consistent whether tested in air or seawater.

Galvanic Corrosion

Positioned towards the noble end of the galvanic series near stainless steels, titanium usually acts as the cathode when coupled with other metals. It remains unaffected by galvanic corrosion but may accelerate the corrosion of the coupled metal. When paired with more noble metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.

Fatigue Properties

Grade 2 Titanium Rod exhibits no degradation in fatigue properties in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and *** growth rates remain unchanged whether in air or seawater.

Weldability

CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable if proper precautions are followed. Due to titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must cover both the OD and ID of the rod. Additionally, the material must be free from grease or oil contamination.

Grade 2 Titanium Rods are typically welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
