CORROSION RESISTANCE:

  • Boasting superior resistance, this material withstands corrosive attacks better than any standard hardenable stainless steel.
  • Its performance is comparable to Alloy 304 in most media.
  • Highly corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for chemical, petroleum, dairy, and food processing industries.
  • Note: Prolonged exposure to stagnant seawater can lead to crevice or pitting corrosion.

WELDABILITY:

  • Compatible with most common fusion and resistance welding methods.
  • Not recommended for oxyacetylene welding.
  • Generally, no pre-heating is required before welding.
  • Inter-pass temperature should be limited to 248°F to ensure material integrity.
  • For enhanced toughness, a complete heat treatment post-welding is advisable.

ELEVATED TEMPERATURE USE:

  • Exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to approximately 1100°F.
  • Caution: Long-term exposure to high temperatures can reduce toughness in precipitation-hardened conditions.

PROCESSING - HOT FORMING:

  • For forging, heat uniformly to 2150-2200°F and hold for 30 minutes per inch of thickness.
  • Optimal hot forming temperature range is 650-900°F while the steel is austenitic.
  • Post-forging re-heat treatment at 1875-1925°F is essential to prepare for hardening operations.
  • Cool forgings below 90°F to ensure optimal grain refinement.

PROCESSING - COLD FORMING:

  • Cold forming of Alloy 17-4 is limited to mild operations due to its inherent hardness in the annealed state.
  • For severe cold working, heat treating to condition H1150 is recommended to prevent cracking.
  • A bend radius exceeding 7T is often necessary.
  • Re-aging at the precipitation-hardening temperature is advised post-cold forming to enhance stress corrosion resistance.

MACHINABILITY:

  • This alloy can be machined in both solution-treated and precipitation-hardening conditions.
