CORROSION RESISTANCE Alloy 2205 showcases excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE According to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Alloy 2205 has an upper-temperature limit of 600°F (315°C). Prolonged exposure to temperatures above this threshold can lead to embrittlement.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES Alloy 2205 offers more than double the strength of standard austenitic stainless steels in the annealed state. It can also be provided in a cold-worked condition, with yield strength surpassing 160 ksi. The alloy maintains excellent toughness at temperatures as low as -50°F (-10°C).
WORKABILITY Alloy 2205 is highly amenable to cold forming, though its high work-hardening rate may necessitate intermediate anneals. Annealing is also recommended post hot forming or cold forming to achieve optimal stress corrosion resistance.
Our forming capabilities are unparalleled, featuring advanced extrusion and cold-working assets for tube and pipe manufacturing. We pride ourselves on housing one of the world's largest pilger mills and a unique hydroforming process for precision fittings.

Duplex 2205 stainless steel pipe, a duplex ferritic-austenitic stainless steel, contains 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. It stands as the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, boasting twice the yield strength of conventional austenitic grades. With unparalleled fatigue strength, it also offers exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion under harsh conditions.
Most manufacturers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 and 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges may be significantly cooler than the bulk, risking cracking in the cooler areas.
The Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Tube showcases exceptional formability across a myriad of manufacturing processes. However, its formidable strength can pose challenges. Even with sufficiently powerful equipment, the increased springback due to the robust nature of this grade must be meticulously considered.
Machining Duplex 2205 requires a nuanced approach, as it demands more effort than machining the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. The process necessitates higher cutting forces, resulting in quicker tool wear. Below are essential machining guidelines: A) Utilize a robust, rigid machine with strong tool and workpiece mounts; B) Keep tool extensions minimal to reduce vibration; C) Maintain a minimal tool nose radius for a sharp carbide edge, yet ensure adequate strength; D) Sequence the machining operations so the depth of cut remains beneath the work-hardened layer from prior procedures.
