Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic general-purpose stainless steel tube featuring 11% chromium. This exceptional composition makes it ideal for applications demanding superior oxidation or corrosion resistance where carbon steel and certain coated steels fall short. With robust oxidation resistance and excellent formability, the 409 tube stands out, despite its lower chromium concentration limiting its corrosion resistance compared to grades like 304, 430, or 439. Nevertheless, it surpasses mild steel in performance. The 409 tube accommodates various forming techniques including roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, and press forming. Post-annealing, 409 does not harden during cold treatment processes like press or stretch bending. Its weldability is fair, though caution is advised for applications involving shock loading due to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, impacting mechanical integrity. Predominantly used in automotive exhaust systems, the 409 tube's mechanical properties provide significant benefits to the automotive and agricultural sectors, offering remarkable resistance to exhaust gases and high-temperature environments. Mechanical properties take precedence over aesthetics, making it unsuitable for decorative purposes.
