- Ferritic, pure chromium, non-hardenable grade 430 boasts excellent formability and corrosion resistance paired with practical mechanical qualities. Its ability to resist *** corrosion makes it valuable in certain chemical applications; its primary uses are in appliance parts and car trim.
- For use in automatic screw machines, grade 430F is a more machinable variant offered in bar form. Grade 434, containing molybdenum, shares beneficial properties with Grade 430. The added molybdenum enhances its corrosion resistance.
- ASTM A240/A240M specifies the premium qualities of 430 grade for flat-rolled goods such as plates, sheets, and coils. Similar but not always identical qualities are detailed in specifications for other forms, including bars and forgings. Specifically, ASTM A582 outlines the Grade 430F characteristics for bars.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 offers robust resistance to various corrosive environments, including *** and several organic acids. The highest corrosion resistance is achieved with a polished or ground finish. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is comparable to Grade 304. Like all ferritic grades, 430 excels in resisting stress corrosion cracking.
- The non-free machining grade, 430F, has notably lower resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, similar to other high-sulfur free machining grades.
HEAT RESISTANCE:
- Grade 430 withstands oxidation at temperatures up to 870°C in intermittent service and 815°C in continuous service. It may become brittle at room temperature after extended heating in the 400-600°C range, an effect that can be mitigated by annealing.
HEAT TREATMENT:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 815-845°C, hold for ½ hour per 25mm of thickness, then slow furnace cool to 600°C followed by rapid air cooling. Slow cooling from 540-400°C may cause embrittlement.
- Sub-Critical Annealing: Heat to 760-815°C and then air cool or water quench.
- This grade is not hardenable through thermal treatment.
WELDING:
- Pre-heat to 150-200°C if welding is required.
- Post-weld annealing at 790-815°C can alleviate embrittlement in the weld metal and heat-affected zone.
- Grain refinement will not occur.
MACHINING:
- Easier to machine than standard austenitic grades like 304.
- Still susceptible to galling and pick-up on the cutting tool.
- Lightly drawn bars are easier to machine than those in the annealed condition.
- Grade 430F, the free-machining variant of 430, is significantly easier to machine.
FABRICATION:
- Lower work hardening rate makes bending and forming easier compared to grade 304.
- Lower ductility limits very severe operations.
- Severe bends should be made with the bend axis perpendicular to the rolling direction.
- Severe cold heading of 430 wire is feasible.
