SPECIFICATIONS
AMS 4928 - Titanium Bars, Forgings, and Forging Stock (Annealed)
AMS 4965 - Titanium Bars, Forgings (Solution Treated and Aged)
AMS 4967 - Titanium Bars, Forgings (Annealed, Heat Treatable)
HEAT TREATMENT
- For maximum hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue resistance, perform annealing at temperatures between 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
The versatile DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy can be heat treated through various methods. - 1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), hold for ½ to 2 hours, then air or furnace cool.
- 2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), hold for 1 to 8 hours, then air or furnace cool.
- 3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), hold for 1 hour, then water quench.
- 4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), hold for 4 to 8 hours, then air cool.
Rapid quenching of smaller sections in the solution-treated and aged condition yields optimum properties. Larger sections or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS
The typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34 in the annealed condition to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.
Forgeability/Formability
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is masterfully forged at a high temperature of 1,750°F (954°C), with the final forging temperature set at 1,450°F (788°C). To achieve optimum properties, a minimum of 35% reduction is recommended.
- The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is challenging to form at room temperature, even in its annealed state. Severe forming operations like bending or stretching can be successfully performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising mechanical properties. Hot sizing or forming is effectively achieved through creep forming within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).
Machinability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar can be efficiently machined using austenitic stainless steel machining methods. This requires slow machining speeds, high feeds, rigid tools, and a generous application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
Weldability
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is readily weldable in both the annealed condition and the solution and partially aged condition, with aging achieved during post-weld heat treatment. Care must be taken to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding can be executed in an inert gas-filled chamber or with inert gas to weld the molten metal and adjacent heated zones, utilizing a tail shield. Additionally, spot, seam, and flash welding are feasible without the necessity of a protective atmosphere.
Special Considerations
The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod may risk contamination by hydrogen from improper pickling, and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during forging, heat treating, or brazing. Such contamination could lead to reduced ductility, negatively impacting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.

Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion
Table 1 demonstrates the general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium in various media. CP titanium shows excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion
CP titanium offers superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. CP titanium does not suffer from crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80 °C (176°F), regardless of pH, even under highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking
Grade 2 titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and remains impervious to SCC even in seawater environments.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium demonstrates superior resistance to erosion in high-velocity, flowing environments.
In seawater with velocities reaching up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), titanium shows minimal material degradation. Even when abrasive particles like sand are present, the corrosion impact remains minimal.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, regardless of higher temperatures. Hydride formation typically requires three conditions:
- 1. pH levels below 3 or above 12,
- 2. Temperatures exceeding 176°F (80°C),
- 3. The presence of a hydrogen-generating mechanism such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys are uniquely immune to microbiologically influenced corrosion. Although non-toxic to marine life, biofouling can occur, which can be minimized with chlorination or increased water velocity through heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Titanium maintains its fatigue performance in seawater, with endurance limits and *** growth rates comparable to those tested in air.
Galvanic Corrosion
Titanium, positioned near the noble end of the galvanic series close to stainless steels, typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals, thereby avoiding galvanic corrosion while potentially accelerating corrosion in the coupled metal. Pairing with more noble metals, like graphite, further enhances titanium's passivity.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod displays no reduction in fatigue properties in seawater, maintaining equivalent endurance limits and *** growth rates as when tested in air.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod is highly weldable with appropriate precautions. An inert gas shield is essential for both the outer and inner diameters to counter titanium's reactivity. Ensure the material is free from grease or oil contaminants.
Manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire, is typically used for Grade 2 Titanium Rods. Low heat input reduces the heat-affected zone size, and post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary.
