Titanium Grade 2 is highly amenable to cold forming using conventional methods. Machining this grade is straightforward, provided that sharp tools are maintained and coolant is liberally applied. Similar to austenitic stainless steel machining, cuts should be deep, continuous, and performed at slow feeds and speeds.

These tubes are cold formable, possess good ductility, and can be welded using standard TIG and MIG methods, with inert gas shielding necessary to prevent embrittlement of the weld zone.

Crystal Structure

At room temperature, ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium tube exhibits an alpha (hexagonal close-packed) crystal structure, similar to commercially pure titanium grades 1 and 3. Upon heating to approximately 885°C (1625°F), it transforms into a beta (body-centered cubic) structure. This transformation temperature is adjustable based on the type and amount of impurities or alloying additions present. The inclusion of alloying elements creates two temperature zones: the alpha transformation zone, below which the alloy is all alpha, and the beta transformation zone, above which the alloy is entirely beta. Between these zones, both alpha and beta forms coexist. Typical transformation temperatures for Grade 2 titanium are 890°C (1635°F) for alpha and 913°C (1675°F) for beta.

The comprehensive production of titanium seamless tubes involves: sponge titanium vacuum arc melting, ingot blanking to acquire hollow blanks, cleaning, cutting and feeding, hot extrusion or oblique rolling and piercing, degreasing, drying, cutting, online annealing and straightening, pickling, multiple cold rolling stages, degreasing, drying, vacuum annealing, straightening, cutting, final inspection, marking (DAXUN), and packaging.

Grade 2 Titanium Welded Pipe Manufacturing Process

Daxun's ASTM B338 Grade 2 titanium welded pipes are crafted from annealed flat-rolled steel plate or strip using an automatic arc welding (TIG) process. Key production steps include: titanium plate uncoiling, shearing, butt welding, cleaning, pipe forming, TIG welding, eddy current testing, pre-sizing, annealing, precision reducing and sizing, straightening, eddy current testing, caliper, marking, cutting, ultrasonic testing, hydrostatic testing, final inspection, and packaging. Post-forming and welding, welded pipes undergo at least one stress relief heat treatment. Daxun employs any filler materials needed during the welding process.

The comprehensive production process includes uncoiling titanium plates, shearing, butt welding, cleaning, pipe forming, TIG welding, eddy current testing, pre-sizing, annealing, precision reducing and sizing, straightening, eddy current testing, caliper marking, cutting, ultrasonic testing, hydrostatic testing, final inspection, and packaging. The pipes undergo at least one stress relief heat treatment post forming and welding, ensuring optimal performance without the use of filler materials.

3. Solution Heat Treating: Executed at 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C) for 1 hour, followed by a water quench.
4. Aging: Conducted at 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C) for 4 to 8 hours, then air cooled.

Optimum Properties

Rapid quenching of small cross sections yields peak properties in the solution-treated and aged condition. However, larger sections or delayed quenching might result in suboptimal attributes.

Hardness

In an annealed state, the typical hardness ranges from Rockwell C 30-34, while it escalates to Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution-treated and aged condition.

Forgeability/Formability

The DAXUN Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Tube, Grade 5, is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). For optimal results, a minimum reduction of 35% is advised.

This titanium tube presents challenges in forming at room temperature, even post-annealing. Severe forming operations like bending or stretching should be performed on annealed material at temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) to maintain mechanical integrity. Creep forming is recommended for hot sizing or forming between 1,000 and 1,200°F (538 to 649°C).
