The 431 Stainless Steel Bar Material boasts exceptional corrosion resistance across a diverse array of corrosive environments. While it holds some resistance to saltwater in colder southern waters, it may not perform optimally in the warmer tropical waters. Overall, its corrosion resistance is comparable to or slightly less than that of the 304 Grade Material. The material exhibits optimal performance when it features a smooth surface in its hardened and tempered state.
This material can resist scaling in intermittent service up to 925°C and in continuous service up to 870°C. However, it is generally not recommended for use at temperatures above the relevant tempering temperature due to a reduction in mechanical properties.
Full annealing is not practical for this grade as it hardens even with slow cooling. Process Anneal involves heating to 620-660°C followed by air cooling.
This grade can be hardened by heating to 980-1065°C, holding for approximately 30 minutes, then quenching in air or oil. Pre-heating at 760-790°C may benefit complex parts or those already hardened. Temper according to mechanical requirements, adhering to the temperatures indicated in the accompanying table.
Avoid the tempering range of 425-600°C due to reduced impact toughness, although this effect is less pronounced than in other martensitic grades.
Welding this grade can be challenging due to the risk of cracking. Pre-heating to 200-300°C is recommended. While Grade 410 filler rod can be used, Grades 308L, 309, or 310 will yield more ductile welds if matching properties are not required. Post-weld heat treatment at 650°C is advised.
In its annealed state, this grade is relatively easy to machine. However, if hardened above 30HRC, machining becomes more difficult. The Ugima Improved Machinability version of Grade 431 significantly enhances machining speeds and tool life.
This material is ideal for components such as nuts and bolts, propeller shafting, pump shafts, beater bars, and marine hardware.
These properties are specified for bar products in ASTM A276. Similar, though not necessarily identical, properties are specified for other products like plates and forgings in their respective specifications.
