STANDARDS
- ASTM/ASME: A240 UNS S32205/S31803
- EURONORM: 1.4462 X2CrNiMoN 22.5.3
- AFNOR: Z3 CrNi 22.05 AZ
- DIN: W.Nr 1.4462
CORROSION RESISTANCE
- The high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content of Duplex 2205 provides it with exceptional corrosion resistance, outperforming 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its composition also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
- Effectively resists chloride stress corrosion cracking and functions well at temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The presence of ferrite enhances Duplex 2205's performance in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Duplex 2205, like other duplex stainless steels, maintains excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- However, it is prone to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for short durations. Therefore, it is not advisable for use above these temperatures.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits excellent weldability.
- Generally, welding without filler metal should be avoided to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- The recommended annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Duplex 2205 cannot be hardened by heat treatment but does exhibit work-hardening properties.
- Special attention is required to account for its higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). For non-compact shapes, care must be taken as edges may cool faster, risking cracking.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across a variety of fabrications. The remarkable strength of Duplex 2205 may present challenges; even if the equipment possesses adequate power, it is essential to account for higher spring-back due to the grade's robust strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is slightly more challenging to machine compared to the 300 series austenitic stainless steels. Increased cutting forces are necessary, leading to faster tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with exceptionally strong and stable tool and workpiece mounting, B) Minimize vibration by keeping tool extension minimal, C) Employ a nose radius on the tool that is just sufficient, using carbides with sharp edges while ensuring adequate strength, and D) Design machining processes to ensure a cut depth that penetrates the work-hardened layer from prior passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205, a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel, is enhanced with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, offering superior performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. Its mixed austenite/ferrite microstructure and alloying elements provide resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 has acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C for specific applications, but may become brittle if exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for extended periods. This stainless steel is versatile, suitable for various applications including strips, coils, and sheets.
Commonly Used Surfaces of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils varies based on cold rolling methods and subsequent surface treatment. Surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and others:
- NO.1: The NO.1 surface is achieved through hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strips, which removes black oxide scale formed during the processes. It is silvery white and matte, primarily used in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries where high surface gloss is not required, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, unlike the 2D surface, is smoothed with a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it highly adaptable for various industries including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, encompasses grades like 304 and 301, used in applications requiring high strength and hardness, such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The work hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel are utilized to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working methods like rolling. The hard material undergoes gentle rolling without annealing post-process, thus the TR hard surface is the rolled finish after cold rolling.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: Upon the completion of the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled as it progresses at a speed of 60-80 meters per minute. This meticulous process ensures the surface achieves a 2H re-rolled bright finish, epitomizing precision and quality.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface is renowned for its superior polishing effect, offering a brilliance that surpasses No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, followed by a meticulous sanding process using a belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm, making it a versatile choice for applications in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical devices, architectural decorations, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL surface, commonly known as a hairline finish, is defined under the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous abrasive surface created by polishing with a 150-240# abrasive belt. Despite unclear restrictions under the Chinese GB3280 standard, the HL finish remains a popular choice for architectural decorations, including elevators, escalators, and exterior wall applications.
- No. 6: Building upon the No. 4 finish, the No. 6 surface is further refined using a Tampico brush or a W63 grit abrasive material as specified in the GB2477 standard. This results in a surface with excellent metallic luster, a soft appearance, and minimal reflection, making it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and cooking supplies due to its outstanding performance.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through a bright heat treatment process following cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and maintain the gloss of the cold-rolled surface, followed by polishing with a high-precision smooth roller to enhance surface brightness. With a surface roughness of 0.05-0.1μm, the BA finish is near-mirror-like and is widely used in food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative applications.
- No. 8: The No. 8 surface, known for its mirror-like finish and maximum reflectivity, is free of abrasive particles. Commonly referred to as the 8K board in the stainless steel deep processing industry, this finish utilizes BA material as a base for mirror processing. It requires only polishing to achieve a beautiful, reflective surface, making it a preferred choice for building entrances and interior decoration.
